A mystery brooch
Suzanne Farrington's letters suggest that Vivien Leigh wore the broadtail dress with a 'Georgian diamond rose' brooch. She also writes that the dress was 'not worn theatrically'.
The dress has been dated by researchers at RAMM who estimate that it might have been made in the 1950s. Photographs of Vivien Leigh during this period show her wearing many different types of furs and many different brooches which are close to the description Suzanne Farrington offers, but it's difficult to be certain if any are the exact one to which she refers.
Vivien Leigh gave a television interview in December 1958 on the programme Small World, where she appeared remotely in a three-way interview with the critic Kenneth Tynan, filmmaker Samuel Goldwyn and interviewer Edward R. Murrow to discuss the film industry in America at this time. The clip below shows part of this interview.
The dress that Vivien Leigh wears in the clip looks remarkably similar to the broadtail dress at RAMM. The circular brooch pinned to the collar section on Vivien Leigh's left-hand side could also potenitally be a rose.
